My heart stared at the world through understanding eyes but the tension was thick.
Because while, forgiveness did flow like the trees do grow and the sun does glow, the change made me sick.
Penny here, dime there, but it wasn’t adding up.
Acting like a vending machine where peace can’t be released until dues are paid but what?
Can be taking so long America when a house divided cannot stand.
Is it possible? That we can be judged by the content of our character not the color of our skin?
But hatred perfumed like oxygen in the air, so I picked up my shovel to dig for an answer.
And as my shovel did rise, an answer’s not what I get but some names of those people we must never forget.
Trayvon Martin, Mike Brown, Eric Gardener, Kendrick McDade, Ramarley Graham, Ariston Waiter, Walter Scott, Samuel Dubose, Philanda Castille, Alton Sterling, Christian Taylor.. you would think the ship just docked!
I was so sure all this had stopped.
But social media shows it’s as real today as any other time in history if I had once chance, yes, I had one wish,
It’d be to God to stop the brutality we now witness.
Just because the system was never broken does not mean that it can’t be fixed.
Just because the wounds are big does not mean that they can’t be stitched.
Just because the change seems slow does not mean that the cause should just be ditched.
There’s no magic eraser for the past that can be bought or sent,
But the past will become the future if we aren’t smart with our present.
